Welcome to the homepage of my Gorton Locomotive works website. This website is dedicated solely to the Gorton Locomotive and Carriage & Wagon workshops and the Motive power Depot, more widely known as Gorton Tank ( 'The Tank' ).
This site will always be under construction as information comes to hand and can be added. Gorton Tank was the main locomotive works of the
Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway and later The Great Central Railway
In January 1923 most of the Railways in Great Britain were formed into four large Railway companies, known as the 'BIG FOUR' The four newly formed companies were named
London, Midland & Scottish Railway .. ( LMSR ) London & North Eastern Railway .. ( LNER ) Great Western Railway .. ( GWR ) Southern Railway .. ( SR )
The Great Central Railway became part of the LNER which was the second largest company of the Big Four
